These aren't so frequently asked, but you might want to know.
What is Lean?
Lean is a formalized business strategy based on the Toyota Production System (TPS). Basically, its the way Toyota builds cars. It took them many years to develop and many more years for a Westernized version of this system to be documented and termed "Lean". It is highly customer focused and works through identifying and reducing waste.
Does lean mean doing more with fewer people?
In part, yes. However, it is not a head-cutting program, nor will it work in the long term if it is used as such. Lean requires the participation of everyone in the company. The most successful lean companies use cost savings to develop new business, and truly look at their people as their greatest asset.
I want to know more, but don't want to call yet. How can I learn more about lean on my own?
A book that we recommend is Lean Thinking: Banish Waste and Create Wealth in Your Corporation. In fact, we almost always leave clients with a copy. Truly eye-opening.
